FOR HIS “WORK favored cheap, second-hand Fords. There was a 1947 coupe, a sturdy little German Ford called a “Taunus,” and, my favorite, a 1966 Mustang with a four-speed and a rare front bench seat. But for the family car, it was nothing but the best, and for Dad that meant General Motors. He was utterly loyal, even after a 1955 Oldsmobile 98 taught him a sharp lesson in humility.
