The evacuation of the British Army together with many thousands of French soldiers from Dunkirk has rightly been claimed as one of the miracles of the Second World War. The details of the operation, code-named ‘Dynamo’, were not received by the Southern Railway until 5pm on Sunday, May 26, 1940.

The speed at which this was acted upon will be realised when at 8pm on the same day Mr C J C Latham, divisional superintendent, Redhill, issued Special Notice 715, stating that evacuation trains could be expected at Redhill from dawn the next day, Monday, May 27.
