Amy Meyerson: As a reader, I really like historical fiction, but I didn’t necessarily want to write it. I tend to over-research, and if I was trying to write straight historical fiction I would never write a word, I would just keep researching and researching. So what I liked with this book was more, what I was interested in exploring was, what we can learn about the past based on what was left behind. Documents both personal and public: just what artifacts can tell us a story. In that regard all of the research was to generate ideas. I mean, anytime you talk to someone about their lives, they have these occurrences that you can’t make up. I think there’s a lot of freedom in the constraints of borrowing from real events.
