The average annual cost of energy is £1,123 in the 10% most deprived areas of Britain, compared with £1,063 in the 10% most affluent areas, research by comparethemarket.com found.
The research found that this is because a greater proportion of poorer households are on standard variable tariffs, which are usually more expensive.
