LIVEIN FULL COLOUR

Perhaps the Russian-born artist Wassily Kandinsky was visiting Morocco when he said, ‘Colour is a power which directly influences the soul.’ Because that is precisely how I felt when I was there.

Morocco’s flavours and especially its colours captivated me two years ago when a friend and I spent three weeks travelling through this historic country in North Africa. It was as if a golden light went on when we arrived. We also spent two days in the Sahara, on a camel, shuffle-shuffle, enchanted by the red-brown dunes, the golden-orange sunsets, the purple-blue evening that overflowed into a ink-black night, with the stars and moon silver in the sky.

We soon understood why Moroccans have been making gorgeous patterned carpets, ceramics and pewterware for hundreds of years. How could they not? The colours inspire them to create. The city Chefchaouen, also known as Morocco’s Blue Pearl, the spectacular sunsets in the Atlas Mountains,
