Electronics never stand still. Somewhat like mobile phones, the major manufacturers of marine electronics try to update their offerings every year.

It means the multifunction displays that now form the nerve centre of a boat’s instrument network are mini supercomputers.

And just as your 1980s IBM may have trouble talking to your mobile phone, so old and new instruments may no longer be readily compatible. There are ways around this, but the safest bet is to renew instruments at the same time as installing a new display.
