The New Generation Anschutz 1761 Rimfire
THE name Anschutz GmbH of Ulm, Germany is synonymous with accuracy. Target models and small game rifles based on the company’s famous Match 54 target action and the less refined Match 64 action equipped with the Anschutz 5099 two-stage adjustable trigger dominated the European rimfire market for decades. Now they've launched an entirely new Model 1761 after years of painstaking research and development which is intended to keep Anschutz at the forefront in terms of both rimfire accuracy and technology.
The Model 1761 represents an all-new series of rimfire carbines chambered in .22LR, .17HMR and .22WMR. It offers a choice of two stock designs (thumbhole and classic) and features two barrel lengths - a 457mm with barrel thread and 508mm that’s unthreaded. My test gun was the 1761 thumbhole featuring an oil finished stock of light-hued European walnut that’s an ultra-modern design complicit with the carbine.
The firearm’s futuristic appearance and innate practicality will hold lots of appeal for rimfire aficionados because it is a sporter in all respects. The stock design is unprecedented having not only a thumbhole through which the shooter’s thumb is inserted, but the butt is skeletonized and lightened by having a large contoured hole through it lengthwise.
