Chenin – originally from the Loire Valley in France, where it was grown to produce table wine – is one of the oldest varietals in South Africa. It used to be called Steen, a million years ago. I remember Steen as being sweet, heavy and nasty – but our wine farmers (bless them) have got seriously good at it
