TRUE NORTH

Old habits die hard. At least that’s my experience fishing New Zealand. While I’ve visited the South Island many times, and have a good feel for the place, besides a couple of saltwater trips, the North has been neglected in favour of familiarity. I knew all about the North’s Tongariro River, a famous winter spawn run fishery, and heard reports of quality trout fishing all over the North Island, but where would I start?

A chance opportunity to fish the Taupo region on New Zealand’s North Island paid off with a memorable experience.

My accommodation was the luxurious Huka Lodge on the banks of the Waikato River. More about the lodge later… Huka has teamed up with local guiding service Chris Jolly Outdoors to offer visiting anglers a unique Taupo fishing experience.

Top guide, Paul
