Since moving home a decade ago, I have learned to mark by the birds the progress of the seasons, particularly the long, aching search for signs of spring.
It is striking how similar each year is. The human world may have been plunged into lockdown by a global pandemic but the avian one is doing its thing as usual, if anything with rather more freedom.
