Old Bike Australasia

Where there’s a will…

I was a big fan of scrambles from high school years and once I got an apprenticeship as a mechanic and had a bit of spare money I bought a Yamaha 125cc Road Trials and converted it for competition scrambles. I was only an also-ran but for two years had fun. Transporting the machine to scrambles was an event in itself. I had a Volkswagen Beetle so there was no room, but a mate of mine, John Harry had an Austin A40 and under his guidance we took out the back seat, then the front wheel of my bike off and slid the machine in the back with riding gear and front wheel jammed in amongst the bike. He scrambled a road Honda twin 125cc that was strongly modified for racing and this we loaded across the tailgate as these tailgates hinged at the bottom. We secured it with ropes through the rear door windows. Bloody hell in winter it was cold for him and his girl friend, later wife, with the windows down.

My first race was at Snake Gulley
