Colours and the myriad ways they can be brilliantly combined is what absorbs artist Jane Hickman the most. She follows a painting technique known as batik, which she uses to depict rich and vibrant natural patterns on prints, scarves, interior fabrics and even greetings cards. Her designs share the same fragmented, opalescent quality as stained glass windows.
Batik is an ancient method that originated on the Indonesian island of Java about 2,000 years ago. Jane was introduced to the process by one of her tutors on a Further Education art course and found herself returning to it a few years later.
