#66 Double time drums
In last issue’s tutorial, I walked you through the process of halving the perceived tempo of a drum groove using timestretching, MIDI programming and Cableguys’ HalfTime plugin. This time round, let’s head in quite literally the opposite direction, doubling the speed of your beats – without compromising their musicality.
Why do this? Well, when you consider that entire genres of dance music (drum&bass and, and while timestretching a sample to slow it down introduces all sorts of artefacts after a certain point as the audio begins to effectively disintegrate, there are no such quality issues when speeding it up. In the non-electronic arena, when you’re looking to change up the rhythmic intensity of a song from verse to chorus, perhaps, doubling up the drums – whether the real thing or a generated by a drum kit ROMpler – is a great way to do it. In the second half of the walkthrough, I’ll show you how to give the impression of a doubling in tempo in a ‘song’ scenario without simply playing the main groove twice as fast. Let’s get started…
