Throughout their long and bumpy history, turnips haven’t had much love. The projectile of choice for ancient Greeks and Romans to hurl at unpopular public figures, they were long regarded as fodder for livestock and the poor. In the 15thcentury, to call someone a turnip was to imply they were an idiot.
