GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROAD BEANS

DID YOU KNOW?

These broad, flat beans, native to the Mediterranean, are among the oldest of cultivated vegetables. Remains found in excavations in northern Israel have been dated to 6800–6500 BCE. They are also known from ancient sites in Egypt.

One day after a spring gale I found my rows of broad beans, which had been grown in a block surrounded by garden stakes and string, lurching over each other like drunken sailors.

On investigation I discovered that some of the stakes had disappeared. Yes, my co-gardener, not a fan of the broad bean, had “borrowed” the stakes for another part of the garden. “You had too many,” he said.
