2020 VISION

Spring has sprung. No more squelching through muddy farmyards or huddling in barns and hides waiting for rats and squirrels to appear. For the next few months at least we can fantasise about increasingly light and balmy evenings spent stalking the hedgerows after rabbits.

Having endured the winter season, when most of my shooting involved mainly a static approach, I can’t wait to get mobile again, walking the lush hedgerows and straining my eyes for a pair of ears poking over the long grass.

And while I won’t be putting my night vision gear at the very back of the cupboard just yet, it will get used less often. Instead, I’ll be digging out some kit I’ve not used in months, such as a bipod. My days of lying on wet, muddy ground are long gone, but in the summer there’s nothing better than lying in ambush. And winter boots get put into hibernation in favour of a pair of far lighter trainers.

Another piece of equipment that comes into its own at this time of year is a decent pair of binoculars. Much safer and more sensible than using your rifle scope to scan the countryside in search of quarry,
