Sitting in prison serving a 22-year sentence, Joseph Maldonado-Passage, also known (to millions of Netflix viewers) as Joe Exotic, admits he has a new understanding of the hundreds of animals who lived in his zoo. “Go sit in a cage with your animals for a week,” he told Netflix in a video posted to Twitter on April 3. “I’m ashamed of myself.”

You can’t make up a story like his: Exotic, a memorably mulleted Oklahoma man with penchants for polygamy and loud sequined shirts, first opened the Garold Wayne Exotic, Netflix’s twisty and twisted megahit docuseries. Exotic “wasn’t allowed to see [the series] because he’s in prison”, says a friend, former zoo owner Tim Stark. But the attention? “Oh hell, yeah. Joe’s loving it. Joe lives for that.”
