THE Goshen hunt country lies north of the Potomac River in the state of Maryland, USA. It is a rolling country of ochre-coloured fields interspersed with old woods of oak and sycamore; a wide-open, galloping country best suited to a thoroughbred horse.

The red fox is hunted and increasingly the coyote, which has been slowly colonising the eastern states since the 1970s. Rather than twisting and turning as a fox would, coyotes tend to rely on their superior speed to escape hounds and a really fast hunt on a coyote is something never to be forgotten. For all that, most American huntsmen seem to consider that their traditional quarry offers more sport and old-fashioned venery.
