Would Richard Negus explain to this ignoramus why hedge laying is seasonal please(Rural crafts, 25 March)?

Richard Negus responds: The season runs from September to March. After this there is a risk of disturbance for nesting birds. There is, however, no law relating to this under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, therefore it is feasible to lay, coppice or trim hedges out of those times. Best practice would demand a hedgerow assessment be made to ensure
