Feeling the Breeze

In the 1960s in Mexico, a blacksmith by the name of Rafael Esparza Prieto created a wrought iron Beetle shape for the owner of a VW parts shop not far from the VW factory in Mexico. This eventually caught the eye of someone at the plant and when it was announced that the Olympic Games were to be held in Mexico City in 1968, Rafael was contracted to produce two running Beetles with wrought iron bodies for the event.

As years passed, Rafael built several others for Volkswagen and a couple for private parties, with a grand total of 23
