There is so little apparent choice for our local flocks of woodpigeons that, when the snow clamps down, their targets are predictable. They head for young cabbage, spinach and, often, the tops of turnips. Moreover, they start their tuck-in early, just in case the supply runs out or the mob from the woods the other side of the bypass finds it first. Hence my look around just after first light.
