The English Home

Appropriately DRESSED

Just as interiors can benefit from sympathetic nods towards the period of the property or its location – whether countryside, coastal or in the city – a garden will also profit from being furnished appropriately. Considering the style of the house, its location and the way in which the garden will be used is essential for choosing outdoor furniture that is not only beautiful, but practical too. For instance, a large country garden will most likely suit classic designs and allow for dining and entertaining areas as well as somewhere for restful afternoon lounging. Meanwhile, a city home might be used predominantly for evening drinks and so the focus will be more on comfortable seating in a sleeker, more contemporary style.

Thanks to huge improvements in design and technology in recent years, comfortable yet weatherproof and durable sofas and armchairs, cushions, parasols and lighting can all be employed. “Flexibility is really important when choosing garden furniture,” says Diana Holloway of Holloways.
