Prolonged bed rest is appealing when you’re not well, but getting up and moving about – as soon as you’re able to – is essential for a speedier recovery, and can reducePressure ulcers, also known as pressure sores or bed sores, are damage to the skin and underlying tissue. These are more common on bony parts of the body, such as the heels, elbows, hips and base of the spine. ‘They’re usually caused by lying in one position in bed, or sitting in a chair or wheelchair for long periods of time,’ says Megan. ‘When you’re poorly, pressure ulcers can develop quite quickly, over a few hours.’ Hospital staff will keep an eye on your skin, and reposition you regularly, but look out for these signs:
