LONDON MAY BE a city of nearly ten million people, but it is also a green city with an abundance of parks, woodland and urban wildlife. Matthew Maran is the proof that a professional wildlife and landscape photographer does not have to live in more distant, open countryside to make a living. Nearby Hampstead Heath provides him with a wealth of landscape possibilities and his local streets are the domain of a thriving population of foxes. With the onset of spring he has as much reason as any of his shire-dwelling contemporaries to look forward to a full and productive season of nature photography…

As a photographer focused on local wildlife and the landscape, what subjects will you be focusing on this spring?

This year will be the fourth year of photographing foxes close to home. It’s an exciting time of year because spring is when the cubs are born and that’s when you see a lot of activity with the vixen and dog fox taking food back to the den! There’s also the possibility of seeing a cub come out of the den for the first time.

You live in North London, where will you be photographing?

There’s two possible den sites, I haven’t been there for a while, but this place could be overrun with fox cubs and all sorts of photo opportunities. So, the continuation
