Raymond Cooke founded KEF in 1961. He began his career at the BBC, becoming a trained engineer before going on to work for Gilbert Briggs at Wharfedale. After five years there, he decided to branch out on his own, starting up a company from a Nissen hut located on the grounds of the Kent Engineering & Foundry (KEF) metalworks company in Tovil, near Maidstone in Kent.
