HOW IT WORKS: THE CARTRIDGE

CRIMP CLOSURE

The end of the cartridge case is folded over into a six (or occasionally eight) pointed star shaped crimp (not visible in this diagram). This seals the end of the tube so the pellets don’t fall out, but opens up on firing to allow the wad and pellets to escape. The crimp provides some resistance to opening, allowing the pressure to build up inside the cartridge and contributing to its performance.
