NEW ZEALAND BOOKS

High Wire

Lloyd Jones and Euan Macleod (Massey University Press, $45)

It’s one of the bugbears of publishing that, although success breeds success, success also inhibits innovation. Each month these pages are offered books that are very much of a kind – those that a publisher knows will succeed commercially, usually because the last book that was like it did so. So it is that very few gamblers have succeeded in publishing.

So it’s doubly pleasing when an imprint such as Massey University Press branches out. This offering from an eminent writer and an equally eminent artist is the first in its new “kōrero series… designed to showcase leading New Zealand writers and artists working together in a collaborative and dynamic way”.
