Jumping on a trampoline outside his home in Rexburg, Idaho, US, last year, Joshua ‘J.J.’ Vallow displayed the typical fearlessness of a 7-year-old. As his stunts grew more and more daring, his 17-year-old sister Tylee Ryan stood nervously by, warning him to be careful and flinching with every flip. “She has always been worried about his safety and wellbeing,” says J.J.’s grandmother Kay Woodcock. “In some ways she was like another mother to J.J.
