It’s better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. That’s an old saying, one that I mostly associate with Terry Pratchett, but it’s an, be it going off-grid (p64), choosing the right generator for your needs (p36), selecting essential tech for surviving longer outages (p52) or how to keep yourself amused without electricity (p58). There’s also a literal candle (p104). But this is still , even if it’s awfully dark outside, and so we’ve got all the usual suspects. Samsung’s new Galaxy S20 Ultra is unveiled (p8), while we’ve got tests of everything from the new Audi A1 Sportback (p80) to Canon’s excellent new EOS 90D (p82). There are more cameras and cars, hybrid tablets, portable speakers and games to look forward to as well, plus all of our regularly scheduled programming. Sometimes it feels good to curse the darkness but it’s always a better idea to spend time in the light. And, with this issue, we’ve got ways for you to make your own light. Even when the country isn’t exactly keen on allowing that.
