CALENDAR CRISIS FOR MOTORSPORT AS VIRUS THREAT RAMPS UP
Motorsport bosses around the globe are facing an organisational headache as calendars have been decimated by the spread of the coronavirus.
There was widespread anger among the Formula 1 fraternity, including world champions Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel, as the plug was pulled on the Australian Grand Prix on the eve of the opening round of the season. The drivers felt that F1 should not have scheduled the race at all amid the increasing crisis.
The opening four grands prix have now been axed, with the contest slated to kick off in Holland at the beginning of May.
World Rally Championship bosses were forced to abandon Rally Mexico after three of its scheduled four days to allowed teams and drivers to return home as flights and travel were becoming increasingly affected. Rally Argentina has been canned, which means the WRC too will not resume until May at the earliest.
Bosses of several other international championships have announced that the series’have been put on ice, including IndyCar, Formula E, NASCAR and International GT and sportscar racing. World) has also been affected.
