Hanami: the ancient practice of ‘flower viewing’ that takes place from the end of March to early May, is one of Japan’s oldest traditions. Dating back to the Nara period (710-794), and even further back with plum (ume) trees, it is as popular today as ever. Visitors flock from all around the world to view the pastel pink spectacle. Feasts and festivals take place under branches brimming with blossom – a celebration of life, and a reminder of both its transient nature and fragile beauty.
We begin our journey in Tokyo, Japan’s bright and bustling modern capital. As the seventh-largest city in the world, Tokyo is, unsurprisingly, full of people and sounds and energy – but, we would soon find out, there are pockets of peace, too. Split into 47 neighbourhoods, or kinjo, each has its own unique character and offerings.
Otsuka is our home for the next few days, specifically Hoshino Resorts OMO5 Tokyo Otsuka. Well-loved for its sake and craft beer micro-breweries, Otsuka is a neighbourhood replete with narrow, almost car-free back streets.
