The ability to make fire is at the top of the list of survival skills. Fire enables you to ward off hypothermia, the leading cause of death for those lost in the North American wilderness. Fire warns hungry wild critters to keep their distance. Fire cooks your food, thereby killing potentially dangerous bacteria. Fire sterilizes water if you have a pot or know how to make one.
