She has weathered countless times of turbulence throughout her incredible reign, and as she approaches her 94th birthday, the Queen remains a steadfast figure in British life, so her message of solidarity as the nation faces the coronavirus outbreak brought comfort as she vowed: “My family and I stand ready to play our part.”
Her Majesty issued a statement days after social distancing measures were introduced to slow the spread of Covid-19. The stringent measures, which require everyone to avoid gatherings and crowded places, have put many staples in the royal calendar on hold, including garden parties, investitures and the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, St James’s Palace and Windsor Castle.
On hearing the news, royal biographer Robert Hardman tweeted: “Changing of the Guard is now off until further notice’. Not even WW2 managed that.”
