I’VE spent most of my life casting lures at pelagic fish. It all started when I was about 15, throwing small metals and lead slugs at frigate mackerel off the Whale Beach headlands on Sydney’s northern beaches. We fished ABU 6500 baitcasters with 4 and 6lb mono line back then which was pretty self-defeating. They didn’t cast as far as a threadline and they weren’t fast enough in retrieve speed.
