GOING UNDERGROUND

ANY one of the 1.35 billion annual users of the London Underground would be forgiven for raising an eyebrow at the most recent iteration of the Tube map. Based on Harry Beck’s iconic 1931 design—with its colourful lines bending at neat 45-degree angles —it includes an awkward bend that extends the TfL Rail line (soon to be the Elizabeth Line) all the way to Reading, although the town is 37 miles from central London.
