“The first techniques are called the hiden ,” Katsuyuki Kondo says. “They are divided into five sections, which are called . Each kajo has standing techniques, seated techniques, rear techniques and half-seated techniques. There is a reason for this: If you are standing, you can move your hips. When you are sitting, you cannot move your hips in certain ways; you are more restricted. You have to be able to execute techniques without having the freedom to move.”
