Since the inception of the Venice Art Biennale almost 60 years ago, president Paolo Baratta has attempted to bring in a sense of edition of the international event this year, curated by Ralph Rugoff, follows the topic of ‘May You Live in Interesting Times’. It encourages an openness, but that of another kind; the use of art and artists to address and challenge the concept of oversimplification, which is so often a result of conformism and fear. The phrase ‘interesting times’ denotes those human events that can be defined as challenging or even menacing, and puts them into perspective through the medium of art.
