There is a certain romance to seeing the world by train. Tales of the Orient Express—sweeping across from Paris to Istanbul amidst scenic vistas as depicted in films and literature—have heightened the allure of luxurious train journeys.
The appeal of crossing countries and seeing picturesque places by train is such that travellers are seduced, despite the proliferation of airline packages. The thought of meandering through the forests of the Canadian Rockies or traversing the South African wilderness or going around Europe, complemented by five-star service, fine food and wine onboard is just too inviting to resist.
