DOES EXTINCTION REBELLION HAVE THE RIGHT TACTICS?

n my view, Extinction Rebellion (XR) is a worthy successor to Climate Camp and has been willing to learn from the magazine saying that Climate Camp did not have local avenues for people to put their concerns into action: ‘The camp is a spasm, and what we need is year-round pressure’ (Oct-Nov, 2009, p.30). XR now applies such year-round pressure and numerous local XR groups are active in a variety of ways. Climate Camp was more or less a UK phenomenon whereas XR now has groups all round the world. XR has its three key demands (climate emergency action, zero carbon emissions by 2025, and citizens’ assemblies) and 10 values, whereas Climate Camp had no clearly agreed demands or values. The situation now is far more urgent than 10 years ago and Marc is right to say that we need to make a significant impact by 2021 or else climate catastrophe will become unavoidable. XR is currently reviewing its strategy and tactics and needs all the help that it can get to achieve this impact – Marc should contribute, if has not done so already.
