From to Victoria Vienna
It was a well-timed moment for Josh Lovell to find Canadian goodies.
The Victoria-born tenor, who had to make a recent trip to Ottawa for two visa applications, found himself confronted by a wall of treats he knew he had to share with his Puerto Rican-born girlfriend. “I’d told her about ketchup chips and all-dressed, and she knows what Smarties are, but not Canadian Smarties, so I thought, I have to get it all!”
The visas were for Lovell’s two upcoming European gigs: first with Salzburg Festival’s Young Singers Project this past summer, and then for Vienna, where he’s just started his contract as a member of the prestigious Wiener Staatsoper ensemble. It’s place at Dallas Opera’s competition and was Grand and Opera Prize winner at the International Vocal Competition’s-Hertogenbosch in The Netherlands. Along the way, Lovell performed a variety of roles, including the Old Emperor Altoum in Lyric Opera of Chicago’s (2017-18), Don Ottavio in with the New Generation Festival in Florence (2018), and Gonzalve in at Wolf Trap. He also participated in The Britten–Pears Young Artist Programme in the UK.
