St Mark Passion (MDG 902 2104-6)

Conductor Andreas Fischer says himself in his liner notes that there is no scientifically proven possibility of bringing Bach’s St Mark Passion to a performable state so what we have here is a ‘best guess’ reconstruction. Some of the music is among the most marvellous found in the Bach corpus and perhaps that makes it worthwhile, but I remain unconvinced by this ‘reconstruction’. It certainly has its attractions, mainly the sung recitatives (all genuine Bach) and I can’t complain about
