Hilo Trollers Tournament Results
The Hilo Trollers held their first tournament of the 2019 season on Sunday, April 7. The weather cooperated, and the ono and mahimahi bite was on! Nineteen boats ran, and 10 landed qualifying flag fish. More fish were boated, including a delicious but non-qualifying ‘aha. The Hilo Trollers only weigh in two fish per flag-fish category. The flag fish are ‘ahi, marlin, mahimahi and ono.
No marlin were landed, but one was lost at boatside. No ‘ahi were landed, but it was still early in the season. Two nice-sized otaru (aku) were landed, and that is a good sign for the coming trolling season.
The largest mahimahi was a beautiful 33.8-lb fish landed on the by Capt. Matt Castro and crew. The largest ono, weighing 37 lbs, was landed on the by Capt. Jimmy for their ono. The second-place largest fish overall was a 35-lb ono landed by Capt. Carl Shioji on the AYA T. The won the Grand Champion Award for their mahimahi and an ono. They were the only boat to land two different flag fish.
