November Travels: Michigan, Colorado

Attendance at the 64th annual Michigan State Numismatic Society (MSNS) fall convention closed out a really busy five-week span for me. This run got under way on the fourth Thursday of October with participation in the annual Coin of The Year nominations exercise held in nearby Stevens Point. The following day Sally and I loaded up the Audi and hit the road south to spend some time relaxing at the Gulf shore condo in Panama City Beach that our daughter Sharon acquired a few years ago. A busy two weeks of local obligations followed our return, before flying off to Colorado Springs on a four-day outing, on the third Thursday of November, to participate in what was termed an “on-boarding” planning session for the new American Numismatic Association board.

This year’s attendance at the Thanksgiving weekend Michigan State convention was my 44th consecutive, dating back to 1976, my travels there being by automobile for the past several years. It was about 7:15 a.m. when I picked up Randy Thern at his house as a travelling companion. There was a pause in our travels in Milwaukee, the purpose of which was to drop off some provisions for son and grandson, Ryan. He had accompanied us on a few occasions around 12 to 15 years ago, serving as a bourse page. It was about 11:30 a.m. when we pulled off I-94 at Portage, Ind., for our Thanksgiving feast, a Denny’s Super Bird (turkey sandwich) and slice of pumpkin pie,
