CHEAP THRILLS
Pretty much every car fan has wanted to go racing at some point, but there’s always one big hurdle; the huge costs! Even simple track days can be expensive, plus there’s always the risk of damaging your car too. It doesn’t have to be that way though!
Driftland, located in Fife just north of Edinburgh, have come up with a great competitive series that is based around comically low-budget ‘endurance challenges’. Teams of two or three mates in completely standard sub-1.4-litre FWD hatchbacks are pitted against each other on the twisty track which is normally used for RWD drift cars! The winning team will be the ones with the most laps recorded during four hours on track, and walk away with £250 prize money. Contact isn’t entirely banned as it’s kind of inevitable with so many cars in close proximity on such a tight circuit, but heavy and deliberate shunts result in significant penalties. Having said that, looking at the cars halfway through the race you’d never think that – after all ‘rubbing is racing’ isn’t it!?
So, if you’ve ever wanted to enter competitive racing but your dad’s not a billionaire oil tycoon, here’s the story of how FF snapper, Ade, roped-in two mates, sourced and prepared a suitable car, and went racing for under £500!
