Over-worked and under-leisured, my partner Celine and I were desperate for a holiday. We’d already narrowed it down to (a) somewhere exotic, (b) somewhere neither of us had been before and (c) Asia. After endless research and daydreaming one of us, I can’t recall who, blurted out: ”How about Sri Lanka?”Condé Nast Traveller recently included the island in its list of “The Top 16 Places to Go in 2016” – so we were on-trend and on-the-move.

A few weeks later, we arrived at this teardrop-shaped island off the south-east coast of India, clutching a 10-day itinerary that we hoped would provide the perfect combination of activity and relaxation.

DAY 1
