OVER THE PAST DECADES SUVS HAVE GONE FROM purely utilitarian people carriers, built solely to transport their payload across terrain that other automobiles couldn’t be driven on, to oversized status-symbol cars that barely leave the tarmac in today’s bigger-is-better world. Naturally, this change in market perception has diluted the go-anywhere nature of the utility vehicles that we knew from 20 years ago, trading off-road capability for on-road comfort and spawning a segment of soft-roader, front-wheel-drive SUVs in various sizes.
