You need to see the back molars. The easiest way is to take the jaw out. CAUTION; take care with slippery hands and sharp teeth, they do cut hands. Sika jaws come out fairly easily, but Reds take a bit more effort
Deer have 6 molars. The first 3 appear shortly after birth, they are milk teeth and are replaced around 2 years later with permanent teeth. Most deer are born in December.
Younger animals
The teeth we are interested in are the 4th, 5th, and 6th molars.
* The 4th molar erupts at about 5 months
