BACK AND PELVIC PAIN

We often experience backache during pregnancy, because our centre of gravity shifts, says Sister Michelle van der Westhuizen, an antenatal consultant from Port Elizabeth.

“As the uterus grows, it gradually lifts out of the pelvic cavity and almost becomes a stomach organ. So the ligaments stretch quite remarkably, and this can cause discomfort.”

❯ Sit and rest often.

❯ Wear comfy shoes.

❯ Wear a maternity support belt.

❯ A chiropractor can sometimes help.

❯ Place a warm beanbag on your sore ligaments.

❯ Do stretch exercises and yoga.
