“AMERICAN BOUNDARY”
“Neutral Zone” to most people today will almost automatically stir up thoughts of “Star Trek” and the battles between the Starship Enterprise and the Klingons. But hearing those same words during the period of December 1918 to January 1923, an American soldier would know the conversation was about the 10-kilometer demilitarized zone between the U.S. Third Army and unoccupied Germany.
WHY WAS THE NEUTRAL ZONE CREATED?
In accordance with the terms of the November 11, 1918, Armistice, the Allies were to occupy the German territory west of the Rhine River.
