Vulpine epidemic
These last couple of weeks have been rather manic with foxes appearing everywhere on my farms. This is partly due to harvest leaving few fields with any cover and the likelihood of many of this year’s foxes being pushed on to find territories of their own ahead of the mating season.
The first call I had was from a farmer who has a small family shoot and had recently got all his young poults in. He had seen a fox hanging around the small wood that holds his release pen. I drove over to his farm late one evening, not expecting to see much – this farm holds only the occasional fox as a rule, so many visits prove to be fruitless.
